Gorgeous circa 1960's sterling silver 925 abalone shell inlay butterfly brooch. Stamped with "STERLING 925" and an eagle mark with the number 112. The eagle mark, introduced by the Mexican government in 1948, is one of the most important indicators of the age and authenticity of Mexican jewelry. The eagle mark, was abandoned as a standard marking in the 1980s due to widespread forgeries that undermined its credibility. Abalone has a iridescent green/blue sheen to it. Roll-over clasp, works great. Stunning piece! Natural, beautiful patina included. May need a cleaning depending on your preferences. Tested with a neodymium magnet and JSP acid, guaranteed sterling.
